The Gospel of John – Quick Summary for the Thursday Bible Study Group

John the Apostle wrote The Gospel of John for three main reasons: First to show proof that Jesus was the Christ and the son of God, Second, to attempts to quiet the hostility of the “the Jews” who opposed recognition of Jesus as the Messiah, as well as those who held that John the Baptist was the Messiah, and third to address the Gnostic belief that denied the incarnation of Jesus.

• John 1:1-2 -In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.
• John 1:14 – The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full and grace and truth.
• John 1:29 – The next day John1 saw Jesus coming toward him and said “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! This is the one I meant when I said ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’
• John 3:16 – For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
• John 19:16-18 – Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified. So the soldiers took charge of Jesus. Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha). Here they crucified him, and with him two others – one on each side and Jesus in the middle.
• John 20:1-2 – Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, “they have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!”
• John 20:8-9 – Finally the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed. (They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.)
• John 20:16 – Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, Rabboni (which is means Teacher). Jesus said, Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet returned to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am returning to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’
• John 20:19 – On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!”
• John 20:31 – But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God and that by believing you may have life in his name.
